24 July 2010

So my friends and I were hanging out on a set of stairs like teenagers at 4 in the morning somewhere along Wellington street when out came the elusive fashion tribe that we only hear of but rarely see.

They are out there, you just need to know where to look.

This Is How You Do Haute- Couture part II

Givenchy

In a bold move, Riccardo Tisci has shunned the catwalk and opted for a showroom style viewing at one of the opulent rooms in his temporary residence, Hotel d'Evreux, which used to belong to Madame de Pompadour. Tisci let out his inner gold studded and heavily embellished fashion rebel self by deciding not to present haute-couture in the traditional way but to make it more exclusive by only showing it to people he deems important enough. This way, he claims, resources could be used to present an even more exquisite collection. Inspired by Frida Kahlo and the Mexican festival Day of the Dead, the were only 10 looks presented. Some dresses painstakingly took 1600 hours of hand stitching, beading and embroidery, this collection should definitely not be judged by it's quantity.

Mert & Marcus Cuteness

Check out Miu Miu's latest ad campaign for A/W 2010 shot by digital manipulators Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott, featuring models Siri Tollerød, Lindsey Wixson, Ginta Lapiņa & Daphne Groeneveld. Tres cute, non?!

This Is How You Do Haute-Couture part I

 Dior

There is always a method to John Galliano's madness. Yesterday he kicked- off Paris Haute- Couture week by presenting his horticulture- inspired A/W 2010/11 collection for Dior at the grounds of the Musee Rodin in Paris.

The designer, who said that he was having a 'floral moment', drew inspiration from Christian Dior's cliff-top garden in Granville, Normandy. The dresses, all done in a dazzling riot of breathtaking and colourful fabrics, were made to look like upturned flowers and the layers of fabric resembled petals of orchids, tulips, roses, irises and hydrangeas. The looks were finished off with 'cellophane' headgear designed by none other than milliner extraordinaire, Stephen Jones.

At the end of the show, Galliano came out dressed as a gardener complete with a straw hat and a pair of lace up espadrilles. On closer inspection, you can see that Galliano is looking very gaunt. I'm wondering if it's the result of an extreme diet comprising of one cube of cheese a day....whatever it is, it doesn't suit him.

Blink

Wow. This is the first post I have written in what seemed like years. It's been crazy these past few weeks and if you would allow me a well deserved moment of self-gloating, I just noticed that a famous author has started following my blog. Haters to the left, please.

1st July, Thursday

The RD was back in town but only for the weekend. After being on top of the world (Nepal and Tibet) for a few weeks without any of the luxuries that we take for granted everyday, RD, understandably, wanted to shop. After we had our traditional catch up at the Mandarin, we wasted no time and attacked the retail giants in Central. First on the agenda was the Chanel Paris-Shanghai installation at Joyce. RD was touring the Himalayas so he wasn't able to attend the launch here in Hong Kong. We worked our way through the installation starting on the ground floor. As I always do, I zoom in on the accessories then the clothes and even though I have seen this installation a few times already, there's always something new I see. Like the felt embroidered fingerless gloves on one of the mannequins. I'd give anything to slap someone wearing these beauties!
Next stop was Soho, where we checked out local independent boutiques. RD and I came across a shop that specialises in menswear and the result was a little fashion shoot that involved a Neil Barrett jacket and a pair of black drop crotch Comme des Garçons trousers (pictured on the left).

The CdG trousers were put on reserve and off we went to check out Lane Crawford where we got up close and personal with Jason Wu (for those of you who are wondering, Jason Wu was the designer responsible for Michelle Obama's one-shouldered chiffon crystal embellished dress during her husband's inaugural party), Martin Margiela, Philip Lim, Haider Ackermann, Alexander McQueen, Miu Miu, Alexander Wang, Thakoon and Stella McCartney.

RD and I were shocked at the gimmicky t-shirts by Miu Miu. First of all they were cheap-looking and second, the printing job was just plain horrendous. All of this for HK$ 1050. And that was the discounted price.

After the sensory assault, we headed over to the newly opened Tom Ford store one floor below Lane Crawford. We were met by neatly hung shirts, sleek jackets, polished leather shoes and a sound that could only be described as a hyena being slaughtered coming from the dressing room. There was a guy having a fit in a Tom Ford tux, complaining that the trousers were a bit 'too goddamn long for his liking' and was ordering the shop assistant to do something about it. I was so tempted to grab a pair of scissors and turn his tuxedo trousers into pedal pushers. Now, wouldn't that have been something?! The nerve of some people.

2nd & 3rd of July, Friday & Saturday

As you can imagine, having RD back in HK town means serious partying. I tried to partake in this merry making even though I was still nursing a hangover from a charity event a few days ago (it's not the age that slows the recovery process- it's the quality of the vodka. That's my excuse and I'm bloody well sticking to it!).
After numerous drinks, a Filipino and Korean meal and some serious dancing 2 days later, RD's mini-HK break had drawn to a close. I wanted him to stay, being the selfish person that I am, but just as quickly as he appeared, he was off again in a blink of an eye.
